This little Gelateria was on our list of must-try Gelato outlets with a reputation that has placed it among the top 10% of Rome’s finest. I Tried several different flavours, including Vanilla, Stracciatella and Milk Chocolate. The Vanilla had a gentle, subtle flavour; the milk chocolate was sweet and flavoursome and, for most people, would qualify as dark chocolate; it had such richness of flavour. The Stracciatella was also tasty.
It wasn’t difficult to see why the reviews for this Dei Gracchi were up there with the best. That said, for me, and I think I spoke for all of us when it didn’t quite match the excellence of yesterday’s session at Gunther, one of the hundreds of rivals sprinkled around the city. Going two blocks without running into a Gelato shop is almost impossible in Rome. Even the worst of Rome’s Gelato outlets (that probably use pre-prepared powdered mixes) are better than the best in most other countries.
Gelateria Dei Gracchi provided a good, solid Gelato, and they even had a Frozen Yogurt or two. We tried the Vanilla Frozen Yogurt and found it refreshing and smooth. Did Gelateria Dei Gracchi deserve its position among the Best Gelato outlets in the city? According to many aficionados, it does. The Hot Spot jury was huddled about this outlet as we decided to move on to the other Gelato outlets of high repute before we concluded. No Doubt a high-class Gelato outlet, but maybe not as exciting or interesting to our palate as the Gelato served at Gunther Gelato. Tellingly it was nowhere near as fresh tasting, and our pictures indicate ice particles which would have detracted from a sublime experience. Maybe we were there at the wrong time, but those ice particles on a Gelato are unimaginable. Many may disagree, and I am sure they have their reasons too, but for us, Dei Gracchi failed to impress us as our visit to Gunther had before it. We returned satisfied but underwhelmed.
